“At Motza, on Broza’s hillside land, I planted a young cedar,” wrote Theodor Herzl in his diary on November 2, 1898. This tree, named erez in Hebrew, provided the inspiration for the name of the community, Arza, which became a pilgrimage site for young and old alike. Israeli Presidents Yitzhak Ben Zvi, Zalman Shazar, Ephraim Katzir, Yitzhak Navon, Chaim Herzog and Shimon Peres planted trees next to Herzl’s tree on what is now known as the “Avenue of the Presidents.” Herzl proposed that a guest house be established on the spot for the country’s cultural leadership, a project that was taken up after the first World War. In 1923, the General Federation of Labor in Eretz Israel established on the site the first Jewish “health resort” in the country. The building, known as the White House, was designed by the Russian Jewish architect Joseph Berlin in a neo-classical style. After the establishment of the State of Israel, it was turned into an exclusive resort for the rising Israeli elite and affluent foreign visitors, who were attracted by the fresh air and captivating view which overlooks the beautiful Sorek valley and pond, the picturesque villages of Bet Zeit, Ein Karem, Aminadav and Orah, and of course nearby Jerusalem. Prominent guests included General Edmund Allenby, Marc Chagall and David Ben-Gurion himself. By the 1980s the site had become a popular event and conference center. Development of the new residential complex surrounding the historic site began in 2013.

The community is linked to Jerusalem by two major highways (1 and 16) which make the city easily accessible at all times. Two large hospitals, Hadassah Ein Karem and Sharei Zedek, are minutes away. The neighborhood is uniquely centered between shopping centers, schools, boutique stores, national parks and forest trails for hiking and recreation. One of Israel’s finest kosher wineries is located nearby.

The community itself is a diverse mixture of non-orthodox, traditional and modern orthodox Jews from all walks of life, and an orthodox synagogue is located in the center of the complex. Families with young children reside alongside older residents and there is a strong sense of community and cooperation. The complex includes a health spa with a swimming pool, sauna and fitness room, solely for the use of the residents.
